Frequently asked questions

When is an e-way bill required?

For most goods, once the consignment value crosses a threshold: ₹50,000 for inter-state movement, and a state-specific amount (sometimes higher) for intra-state movement. Some movements, like inter-state job work, need one regardless of value.

What decides an e-way bill’s validity period?

Distance, at one day per 200 km for normal cargo (rounded up), with a longer allowance for over-dimensional cargo.

When is e-invoicing (an IRN) required?

Once your aggregate annual turnover in any financial year since 2017-18 crosses the notified threshold, for every B2B invoice, export, SEZ supply and B2B credit/debit note. B2C invoices never need an IRN.

What happens if I report an e-invoice too late?

Above a higher turnover threshold, the IRP rejects a document reported more than 30 days after its invoice date. A document that needed an IRN but never got one is not a valid tax invoice.
